Annual Chand Raat Bazaar

Chand Raat Bazzaar declared as the biggest block party in the US. by Pakistani American Media

Food Pantry

Brooklyn is inhabited by a low-income South Asian migrant community. Most of the population is illiterate; many are seeking work or have low-wage jobs. Poverty is on the rise in minorities so most of the social and psychological problems associated with poverty and lack of education are seen in this community.

For the reason, the ACMW Inc. decided to supply food to those poor women who are not eligible for food assistance programs, or those who are getting insufficient public assistance. ACMW is making them aware about public assistance as well as providing food to them.

The first food pantry took place on December 28, 2009 at ACMW office and all the women members participated in the inaugural ceremony. They made donations and showed their zeal and commitment for the continuation of the pantry.

Food bags of basic provisions were distributed to fifteen women, and these bags are being distributed every month.

Improved Economic Opportunities

The majority of women of South Asian community in the New York area live below the poverty line. Due to lack of education and technical skills, most of the women are jobless or have low wage jobs. ACMW provided vocational skills in cutting, tailoring, embroidery and knitting. The purpose of these trainings was to impart skills in stitching their local dresses in their houses so this way they can earn money.
Training was also provided in money management, computer skills, and others useful in seeking gainful employment in the USA.
Provision of equipment like sewing machines etc. is also made to those women who aren’t able to afford such equipment.

Education Facilities

ACMW has established Adult Literacy Center in Brooklyn, which has enabled 26 women to read and write. English language and computer learning was also offered and taught.

Open Court for General Public

ACMW has been fortunate enough to organize a series of seminars with the collaboration of local philanthropists for the promotion of legal awareness among womenfolk of Metropolitan New York community. Many minority women especially of South Asian background are not well educated and have lack of knowledge and information regarding their fundamental rights. Domestic violence is prevalent in this community and the majority of migrant women are unaware of their rights and the protective laws in the United States. The purpose of these seminars was to make them aware about their fundamental, social and family rights and elimination of domestic violence.

Following impact has been made:
I. Hundreds of women made aware about their rights.
II. Eight women registered their case regarding domestic violence.

AWMC Inc. has made connection with several women attorneys who have volunteered to provide pro-bono or heavily discounted services for women who may need their services.

Improvement of Social Status

ACMW has formed five women's groups in the New York. The purpose of formation of the groups is to make them aware and mobilize them for self-reliance, economic well-being and self-development. Training was provided to women about social organization.
